“Jarvis, initialize sequence. What do we got here?”
(via rdjinspiringlybeautiful)
These three scenes display Tony’s emotional depth and inner strength so beautifully. He comes out from that cave with his mouth tasting of suffocation and drowning and death. He is metaphorically slapped in the face by the sight of his own weapons and then realizes that no matter what he does, they will never free him.
He has a moment of inner terror and panic at the fact he is alone, far from home and those he loves and who love him and let’s the hopelessness of the absolute certainty that he will die before the week is out engulf him. He acknowledges that either the terrorists will become frustrated and murder him or the shrapnel from his own design will work into his heart and kill him.
Then he does what Tony does best. He denies himself. He refuses to let himself accept the inevitability of the situation. He flat out proves to himself that he is no-ones bitch, swallows his fear and fixes his situation. He will never back down, he will always look for another option and if there are only two, he will invent that third one. because he is Tony Stark and if he learned anything from his father, it is that if he’s knocked on his ass, then, damn it, Tony had better get up and do it bigger and better next time.

Paraphrasing Tony at the end of Iron Man 3 here:
“You can take away my toys, my suits, my gadgets. I’m still Tony Stark but…I’m a different man now. I am Iron Man”
This made no sense to me when I saw Iron Man 3 for the first time yesterday and I was still too pissed off that he destroyed the suits and yanked out the arc so (seemingly) unthinkingly to process it. However, I saw the movie again today and this time, that final monologue from Tony and especially how Robert delivered it and the way he emphasized certain points suddenly made sense..It confused me the first time. How can he trash the suits, remove the arc, be a ‘different’ man and then in the same breath claim he is Iron Man? Plus, look at the hole in his chest in the first gif. Even if he removes the shrapnel, he still has a six inch cavern plus rearranged organs in his chest, how would he heal that? And if it is all done with electro magnets then why didn’t he use them in IM2 when he was dying?
Simple. In the MCU, Tony developed the Extremis code not Maya. Tony has an edetic memory. He saw the formula he originally created in the Bren hotel room when Maya flashed it at him right before Mandarin shot her. He would have no problem reconstructing it. He told Pepper he would’fix’ her. So the answer how can he be a new man and still be Iron Man is simple…..because he is.
Tony at some point between the final shot on the oil rig and us seeing him have the shrapnel and arc removed, reconfigured and injected himself with the Extremis code. The implants we see him injecting himself with earlier in the movie would serve as the ports for the bleeding edge armor. Ergo he is a new man. He is updated and reconfigured and he literally is Iron Man because the armor is now embedded in his bones. He no longer needs the suits and the code would rewrite his body to heal it completely.
If Avengers doesn’t open with the bleeding edge pouring out of Tony’s ear and revealing that Tony has Extremis I will be extremely extremely surprised.
